Why can't Christians agree?

Why are there are so many different sorts of Christians, all claiming to be the real thing and all criticising the others? Surely if they're all worshipping the same God they should at least get along with each other? And with so many different perspectives how can we ever really be sure about anything Christian?

Many people find the Old Testament an irrelevant collection of unpleasant stories and bizarre religious rules. They see in it a vindictive and barbaric God who is a million miles away from the loving God proclaimed by Jesus Christ.
